A note from volunteer Jane Roane about why she loves volunteering with PeaceWorks.
“A few years ago I heard statistics relating to sex trafficking and was horrified to learn that this was a huge problem in Colorado! Because I have 7 grandchildren (6 granddaughters), I wanted to get involved in some way to help with this problem. I had started my search for an organization that helped victims of sex trafficking when I happened upon the PeaceWorks booth at Bailey Day!
Although PeaceWorks does not deal specifically with sex trafficking victims, it made sense that women and girls would be less likely to be victims if they had a safe haven from a dangerous situation. So . . . I became a volunteer.
I showed up at the shelter and offered to help Jane Gillies search for bedding in the garage. Oh my! What a sight! Bags and bags of donations and no system for sorting, storing, etc. I LOVE to organize! Now, being a part of the Garage Gorillas is most fulfilling. I feel that my skills are used to help the shelter in ways many others would to enjoy. It is always fun working with Jane Gibson, Jane Gillies and Curt Robinson! Our sorting techniques have evolved to the point we are like a well-oiled machine! We went from a huge room filled with bags and bags of donations to having a secure room for storage, a dressing room for clothing donations, and a system to re-donate what we cannot use. It feels good to work with people who are not afraid to get their hands dirty to make the community a better, safer place!”
